James S Burns was a Civil War veteran

Making the case that James S Burns, 1836-1908, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, is the James S Burns who served in the New York 194th Infantry Regiment in 1865.

James S Burns, about 1905

My great-great-grandfather James Burns was a Civil War veteran. A group of citizens in Grand Rapids are trying to document the veteran status of veterans buried in Fairplains Cemetery. When we shared evidence about my gr-grandfather Burns they hired a
genealogist to check to see if they had enough evidence that he was the civil war veteran.

Their genealogist agreed that he was, and they will put a flag socket, on his monument, and veterans' gravestone.

There is a written abstract of muster records from the New York Adjutant-General showing a James S Burns: He was living near or in Chemung County, near Elmira, New York. He signed up for one year service in Company C, 194th Infantry Regiment on March 31, 1865. He was 28, born about 1837, in Orange County. He was a cooper by occupation. He was a Private.  He was promoted to Full Sergeant 8 April 1865. He and his company were mustered out by order of the War Department 5 May 1865. He was about average height for the time, 5 foot, 6 ¾ inches. He had blue eyes, brown hair, and fair complexion.1

Copy of page in Abstract of Roster book of NY Adjutant-General. James S Burns. From web site Ancestry.com.

It appears that my grandfather James S. Burns was born in Minisink, Orange County, New York, and lived in Catlin, Chemung County, New York, and Holland, Ottawa county, Michigan, and Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan. He was also a cooper by occupation. He was not eligible for a pension. This will be proven by census, masonic, death records and family records. .

Michigan Death Records, his death certificate, show his age at 71 and birthplace in New York, and father as William Burns. Death date at Grand Rapids, was 11 Feb 1908 and birth year 1836. Burial at Fairplains Cemetery. 2

The early US Census records show William Burns, James's father, living in Orange County.

1830 Census: William Burns: Minisink, Orange, New York: 1 male 70-80 years. 1 Female 40-50 years. The man was a foreigner, not naturalized, and the female was native born. He may have been grandfather of James S. Burns. Listed next line in 1830 census was Lawrence Burns, 1 male under 5 years, 1 male 20-30 years, and 1 female 20-30 years. 3

1840 Census: William Burns: Minisink, Orange, New York: 1 male under 5 years, 1 male 5-10 years. One male 30-40 years; one female under 5 years. One female 30-40 years.
This William (born. about 1798) was father of James and James (born April, 1836) and his brother Horace (born about 1834) and mother Bathsheba Shuts (born about 1800). 4

1850 Census: William Burns: Minisink, Orange, New York: William age 52 carpenter, Bathsheba 45, Horace, 16; James 14, Minerva 10. All born New York. family 363.5

1860 Census: William Burns: Catlin, Chemung, New York: (name mispelled Barnes.) All born New York. Family 1485. William, 62, farmer, personal estate $1,000; Bersheba 54; Horance 26, farmer; James 24, cooper, personal estate $100; Minerva 20, milliner. 16

In 1865 James enlisted at a private soldier in the New York 194th Infantry Regiment in Elmira, Chemung, New York.

In about 1869 James married Emma M Kelley in Michigan (per census records).

1870 Census: James Burns: Holland, Ottawa, Michigan: James age 34, cooper, $900 value of real estate, ; Emma age 21, keeping house; and boy Burns 3/12. All born in New York. Family 323.7

1880 Census: James S Burns: Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan: family 176 residence 194 W. Division Street. James S Burns 44, works stove factory, born New York; Emma 32 Keeping house, born New York; Leon 6, born Michigan, at school.

The 1890 census was mostly lost in a fire in Washington, D. C.

The 1900 US Census for James Burns, Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan. Residence 194 South Jefferson Street. James S Burns, born Apr, 1836 New York, 64, married 31 years. Parents both born in New York. Cooper, home owned in full. Emma M born Oct 1849, age 50, married 31 years, 3 children born, 1 still alive. Leon J. born July 1876, age 23, born Michigan, foreman R.R. Freight House.8

Letters from the State Secretaries of the Masons in New York and Michigan to further document James Burnses residences.

This letter shows that James lived in Catlin, Chemung, New York.

This letter shows that he lived in Catlin, Chemung, New York and moved to Holland, Ottawa, Michigan and Grand Rapids, Michigan.

And it is necessary to prove that he was the same man who was in our family. His grand-daughter Irene Tracy Burns had a card in her scrapbook that showed that James S Burns was a worthy master in the Unity Masonic Lodge, Holland, Michigan in 1877. The Scrapbook in my possession.

The other question was why did James not receive a Civil War governement pension.l He was not disabled with a service related disability. In 1890 a second type of disablity act was passed. “ The pension was provided based on proof of at least ninety days of military service in the Civil War, of having been honorably discharged, and of the existence of a bodily disability not caused by vicious habits but not necessarily of service origin. Pensions were also given to the widows and children of Civil War soldiers without regard to the cause of the soldier's death.”9

He and his widow were not eligible for this pension as he was in the military for about 35 days only.

In summary, my grandfather Burns was born in Orange County, New York, about 1836-37 and he was a cooper and lived in Catlin, Chemung, New York. He moved from Minisink, Orange, New York, to Catlin, Chemung, New York, to Holland, Ottawa, Michigan, and then to Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan. He was, beyond a reasonable doubt, the James S. Burns who joined the 194th NY Infantry Regiment, Co. C.  No other James S. Burns were found under similar circumstances.

BERNHARD KARL YOUNGQUIST, who married Alma Soderquist in Seattle, and who was her husband when she died.  Alma was sister of Oscar Soderquist.  Who was Bernhard and what happened to him?
Probably Bernhard and Alma Youngquist 1910

Karl Bernhard Pettersson was born 4 Aug 1886 in Boldoen, Vissefjärda, Kalmar, Sweden.

He changed his name to Youngquist when he came to Seattle wth his older brother F Youngquist in 1905 at age 19.

About 1906 they joined the First Swedish Baptist Church and learned English there in classes.

In 1906 he took the first step to getting citizenship by applying for Declaration to the court for citizenship. Then in five years he could apply for citizenship as Karl Bernhard Youngquist. He probably never became a US citizen.

Departure for Trip to Sweden in 1907 in Seattle, King.

Probably came with his older brother F. Youngquist. on 29 Nov 1907 in Seattle, King , Washington United States registered in Gothenberg as Karl Bernhard Pettersson.

Changed his name to Bernhard K Youngquist.

In April 1910 US Census he was living in a large boarding house with his brother F.Youngquist. They were both laborers on the streets.

On 3 December 1910 he married Alma Serafina Soderquist at First Swedish Baptist Church.

4 July 1917 he was a cabinet maker and lived in Haller Lake area of Seattle. His wife was ill and he said he had to support her.  She stayed sometimes at the Firlands Sanitorium, the county TB sanitorium near present Kings School.

21 Oct 1917 his wife Alma died from tuberculosis. Buried Washelli Cemetery, Seattle.

1918 he was a ship joiner and lived with Charles and Emily Soderquist Nordell.  144 W 81st Street.

April 1920 in the US Census he was living along at his home at Haller Lake north of Seattle. He was a house carpenter.

1 June 1921 he married Esther Anderson at First Swedish Baptist Church, Rev. Emil Friborg. She was born 1887 in Sweden. and came to Seattle with her family in 1891.

Probably he left the US in 1931 due to the Depression and lack of work. Esther probably refused to relocated to Sweden and they divorced.

Departure: Travelled back to Sweden. about 1930 from Seatle, King, Washington United States.

24 Dec 1932 he married Elna Margareta _______ at Mortorp parish church in Kalmar County. She was born there in 1889.

Bernhard lived in Mortorp, Kalmar, Sweden in 1959. They may have had children.

Karl Bernhard Ljungqvist died on 30 Jan 1959 at the age of 72 in Tallhagen, Kalmar, Sweden.

His wife died in 1989 about age 100.

Ruth Iris Soderquist Andersson (1941 - 2008) - Find A Grave Memorial

Ruth Andersson, my mother's cousin in Sweden.  She sent Christmas cards for many years and hosted us for dinners and let us stay with her on a trip to my grandfather's home parish.  She was a very strong and remarkable person.

Her friend wrote in Swedish a memory of her, here translated by Google:

My Friend Ruth Andersson
Marie Söhrman

On 26 September [2008] I was at Ruth Anderson's funeral in East Ämtervik Church. Ruth worked at the bank and the former post office at Eastern Ämtervik before it was closed. Then she continued her work in home care. She hand worked and painted porcelain figurines. Ruth was one of those people who never took a lot of space but still was there for anyone who needed her care. It was not long ago, Ruth ended up in home care and then, too soon, within a few years, became ill and herself needed the help that she gave others throughout her life. It was not long ago she wandered from her home and up to mine to help me through the home care that I needed. It did not matter if it was raining or a snowstorm, Ruth went punctually doing the rounds to all who needed her care. This was not an ordinary work for her, but rather a calling. It did not matter that the day was significantly longer for her than the time she actually got paid for. "I want to work at my own pace, she said, and also I need these walks." I remember my husband Kjell described that when Ruth did any household chore for us so she would not disturb us, she was scarcely heard as she handled dishes. Kjell said she made just as much noise as a "dust mote flying in a draf"t. A loving description that symbolically explains how Ruth managed her task when she helped a fellow human being. I also remember how she in a natural manner got in front of television camera after Ingela Power made thedocumentary about me and Kjell that was shown on TV in summer of 2001. Ruth's children wonder to this day how I managed to get her to go along with this, she never even wanted to have a still image photographed or be central in any way at all, They said.Ruth's explanation was that she thought it was important to show people how disabled people were in reality, though they are invisible to many. "I do not think people understand how hard she has it, "she says in the film. I don't think it was easy for her to do this but she thought it was important that it came out. To me, she often said when someone came to me and Kjell on a coffee break:"Do not lift the thermos, but let guests pour themselves."When Ruth was at the community center and helped us by sitting in the bank museum, she would also then like a mother bird asked me: "Are not you going up to bed for a while, I think it looks like you need it, you're running around here too much. "I have often wondered how she could know things long before I came to, that which later gave me pain and difficulty sleeping late at night. .Ruth was an angel who stayed too short a time here on earth. She never had time to think about herself and when she finally received a pension after a long working life, well then she got sick and left us too soon. Ruth was only 67 years.  WOMEN FROM OLD TINTYPES
My uncle Bob found some old tintype pictures of women from about 1890.

The woman on the right is Maria Backlund, the one on the left is possibly a niece who has arrived in good health from Sweden.  Perhaps it is Emily Soderquist?

A group of women with bouquets.   They are dressed for a wedding?
The lady on the from Left is Maria Backlund.  The one in the middle Anna Caroline Carlson who married Lars Magnus Backlund (in US: Rev. Lewis M. Backlund) married 4 Oct 1890, Arapahoe County, Colorado.
Here is a picture of them at the time of their marriage:        Anna was born in
Fa:rnebo, Filipstad, Värmland, Sweden in 1869.

Women in white dresses and fancy hats.    The woman on the left is perhaps Maria Backlund            who married a Mr. Frisk in New Jersey.   Her sister is Anna Backlund Soderquist
